Wayfinding & Signage

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Wayfinding, Signage

A natural selection

A local and national horticulture education resource with more than 1,000 acres of public gardens, hiking trails, and native areas, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum turned to Larsen for a wayfinding plan and exterior signage that would complement their focus on the natural world. After holding focus groups to determine visitors’ directional needs, Larsen developed a simple nomenclature that would give structure to the Arboretum’s collections. Then we designed pedestrian, vehicular, regulatory, and special event signage featuring classic fonts, arrows, numbers, and immediately recognizable symbols, as well as a palette of earth colors and rough cedar. Larsen considers this project a success because visitors are too busy enjoying the beauty of the Arboretum to notice our signs.
