Wayfinding & Signage

Minneapolis Public Library Wayfinding, Signage

Guiding exploration, fostering discovery

A library is a treasure chest to which every citizen has a map. Once inside, however, each visitor begins a unique quest — and signs point the way. Collaborating with Pelli Clarke Pelli and Architectural Alliance, Larsen designed the wayfinding plan and signage system for the new 353,000 sq. ft. Minneapolis Central Library. The signage complements the open architecture and clearly marks multiple destination points with bold, contemporary signs, particularly in the Children's Library and Teen Central. To highlight information desks, Larsen used the international symbol for information: a lowercase letter i, set off by an LED-illuminated panel. Library patrons can easily navigate this magnificent public space using the flat-screen monitors, information kiosks, and multilingual signs.
